Pillar 1: Solve a Problem

A problem that concerns many people and many parents are is it bad for letting kids play video games? Some people might say no it’s not good for the kid's health while other say yes it can improve some skills of theirs but the real question is what games are you letting the kids play? There are many games out there and knowing the right one to pick can be tricky but with a little research you can tell what game is good or bad for kids. I’m going to tell you why video games can be good for kids and also what can be bad about them.

There are educational and problem solving games that lets the children learn and grow while other games can cause violent actions. There are many article out there saying that video games can cause addiction, depression, social anxiety, etc. With that said most of the games the kids are playing deal with violence have inappropriate actions for their age. Video games get bad social publicity because they are tied into shootings and crimes that then make parents want their kids to stop playing all types of video games. That is the main reason parent dislike video games and don’t allow their kids to play. Try and avoid those types of games with any violence and give the kids an educational game that helps them in their life.

The games that can improve hand-eye coordination, problem solving skills and thinking skills are games meant to help those areas in a person's life. The games that help kids don’t get the recognition there should get. If parents knew what games to buy for their kids then I think that they would consider letting their kids play games. Having the right game is extremely important if you want kids to play video games. Certain games are great for bring families together having each family member work together as a team. There are many games out there that have zero violence and can live a good impact in a kid’s life. Now that you know that there are many games out there that are great for kids, there are also many consoles great for kids.

The popular consoles out today are just a box with a controller and no interactions. Most games are played sitting down and no movements which can lead to laziness. There is a console that involves movement and you probably heard of it, Nintendo Wii. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a video game console that has a different style controller as seen in the picture below:

This controller uses motion control and tracks your movement. The games design for this console requires movement which can be more excited to play. I always thought this console was an amazing idea to get kids more active. I do think that there should be more consoles and games out there that involve more physical activities. I talked about this in one of my earlier posts but virtual reality could be another good game to get more people active. With VR there are games that require players to stand and do hand motion. Similar to the Wii, VR tracks the hand motion but in a reality you see through a headset. Both concepts are a great idea for kids to become more active while playing video games. Now that you have the correct game and the right console now there should be a time limit.

Another problem is letting the kids play video games for hours on end. Having gaming hours limited to kids also helps them to know when it’s time to get off. This is also on the parent to limit these hours. With limited hours it allows kids to find other things to enjoy and having time outside during the summer like we are now. Even if the games are played on the Wii or VR there should still be a time limited so they can get a rest from the screens on their eyes. Also having the kids doing extracurricular activities other than video games can help them. The limited time can also help some of the negatives I mentioned earlier and it could also help the benefits. There are some article also about video game addiction and with the limited time there are no problems with the addictions. If a child plays certain video games no-stop there can also be family problems that arise. Another reason why limited time is a great answer to many video game problems. With that said controlled time is important for how the video games can affect the children.

What I’m saying is it’s okay to let you kids play video games if you control what games they play and the time they spend playing them. It will always be good for kids to play outside with friends and family but on rainy days or everybody is busy it can be good to let kids play video games. It ends up on what the parents want for their kids but overall it's okay to let kids play video games.
